Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers

Last modified: October 7, 2009 - 8:07 AM

The WSC Road Safety Officer coordinates a number of activities designed to assist learner drivers to become safer drivers. These include workshops and hands-on driving events.

GLS Workshops for supervisors of learner drivers

A crucial component of the NSW Graduated Licensing Scheme (GLS) introduced in July 2000 was that all learner drivers must obtain a minimum number of supervised driving experience. This must be documented in a log book and must demonstrate exposure to a range of road, weather and traffic conditions, including night-time driving.

In order to provide practical advice about the role of supervising a learner driver, the Road Safety Officer, with support from the RTA, offers a workshop four times a year.

This workshop reinforces the role of the supervising driver and the importance of the 'stepped approach' to allow learner drivers to get their initial driving experience under conditions involving lower risk, and then gradually present them with more complex situations. It also highlights the importance of teaching 'low risk driving' techniques to learner drivers and the important role of parents in establishing parameters and support for provisional licence holders.

The two-hour workshop is for parents and other supervisors of learners drivers and seeks to provide practical advice on supervision, completing the Log Book and new licence conditions.

Logbook Run for learner drivers and their supervisors

The Logbook Run is a great opportunity for:

  • supervisors to put what they have learnt at the workshop into practice, and
  • learner drivers to cover some of the many topics included in the Learner Driver Log Book plus clock up some driving experience hours. .

The Logbook Run starts with a short workshop for learner drivers and their supervisors followed by a drive on a set route that includes a wide range of road conditions and tasks such as random breath tests, round-abouts, traffic lights, narrow bridges and windy roads.

A range of drives will be offered starting with a short 30 minute trip for inexperienced learners to a longer Logbook Run towards Goulburn for more experienced learner drivers.

BOOKINGS ARE ESSENTIAL: Registration forms can be downloaded below or collected from local libraries, Wingecarribee Shire Council offices in Moss Vale or the RTA Motor Registry at Welby.
